Came across an interesting article in the Nov 28 issue of Fortune. The author, Geoffrey Colvin, makes a good point: Wal-mart can't drive mom and pop stores out of business, only customers can.
I SO disagree. If customers are not given the option to shop at Wal*Mart, they will chose the mom n' pop store. However, Wal*Mart comes in and offers lower prices (they can b/c they can scale up. Customers, being rational beings, chose lower prices. Hence it is the existance of Wal*Mart, not the customers' rational choices, that kills mom n' pop stores.
